Cardiology
Heart Vets offers a comprehensive cardiac referral service, including in-depth clinical investigations, an online telemedicine service for vets, and advanced interventional (keyhole) cardiac surgery. Their experienced cardiologists are fully equipped to diagnose and manage heart conditions in small animals, using state-of-the-art portable ultrasound machines with high-quality Doppler capabilities. They also utilize digital electrocardiography (ECG) and Holter monitors to assess heart rate and rhythm, both in-clinic and during rest or exercise at home.
While coughing can sometimes indicate heart disease, it is often linked to respiratory conditions. To ensure accurate diagnosis, they offer bronchoscopy under general anesthesia, allowing direct visualization of the airways and collection of lung samples. In many cases, respiratory investigations can also be arranged at one of their satellite clinics.

Heart Specialists
Alex joined Heart Vets in 2018 following three years in first opinion practice in Somerset and South Wales. She completed her internship, further training and RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Veterinary Cardiology) to become a fully-fledged Cardiologist in July 2021.
Amy joined Heart Vets in August 2021 after working alongside the team for several years, bringing her referral anaesthesia and imaging nursing expertise to our cardiac clinics.
Alex and Amy worked together to develop and grow the Somerset Heart Vets clinics to bring referral cardiology services and support to Newton Clarke and surrounding first opinion clinics. They visit the Sherborne clinic regularly on a Wednesday, offering tailored Specialist-led cardiac investigations, treatment and patient support as well as teaching and training for the vets and nurses at Newton Clarke. As well as internal patients, they also accept external referrals.
Alex and Amy are also part of the surgical interventions team at Heart Vets, which includes pacemaker implantation, PDA closure, Balloon Valvuloplasty and Pulmonic stenting. They have a fantastic relationship with the whole team at Newton Clarke, sharing the same core values and practical approach to providing individual compassionate patient care, first-class service for owners and unrivalled support for referring vets and colleagues.
